Painting Self-Portrait 2016
Self-Portrait 2016, acrylic painting on canvas depicting the portrait of the painter Ania Luk. Portrait painted with a brush and painting knife.
Contemporary realistic painting, inspired by the creativeness of Stanislaw Ignacy Witkiewicz.
Self-portrait
First of all it’s a portrait of an artist produced or created by that artist. The first self-portraits appeared in the Middle Ages (lasted from the fifth century to the fifteenth century), and spread at the end of this era. During the Renaissance (XVI century), one of the forerunners of self-portraits was a German painter Albrecht Dürer.
In later periods, many artists such as Rembrandt, Vincent van Gogh or Stanislaw Wyspianski, painted self-portraits throughout their life, thus creating cycles of their likenesses.
“Faces are the most interesting things we see; other people fascinate me, and the most interesting aspect of other people – the point where we go inside them – is the face. It tells all.” David Hockney
Stanislaw Ignacy Witkiewicz
Polish writer, painter, philosopher, playwright and photographer, who created under the pseudonym “Witkacy” (1885 – 1939).
Seems like, in 1926, Witkacy gave up completely with oil painting and focused on pastel portraits. Hence, his portraits were divided into five types, depending on the location on the scale: naturalism – pure form. Best selling were realistic portraits, but Witkacy constantly experimented seeking pure form (complete freedom in portraying) with the help of drugs.
Portraits of all types are eagerly bought by collectors because they are original and demonstrate great creativity and artistic talent Witkiewicz.
Note: Using images of Ania Luk’s paintings can only be done with the written agreement of the artist.
